Obama to Congress: Deport the Kids

Posted 4 hours ago
It is, precisely, feminist and anti-racist politics that shield and allow powerful men to run roughshod over women, perpetrating inconceivable acts of violence behind the veneer of allyship… We are trained to believe the words men say even if those words contradict their actions and even if those actions are personally and structurally violent toward us. I believed my father when he told me he loved me while simultaneously striking me. Similarly, I had it on good authority my partner was a paragon of anti-racism and anti-patriarchy. Friends and colleagues who knew of his ideology celebrated his politics and scholarship because allies to feminists of color are so rare that when we meet them, we glorify them for being one of the few claiming to stand with us instead of recognizing the power they wield as our self-proclaimed allies.

The Border Children: They Are Not Criminals and They Need Counsel - Geoffrey A. Hoffman

"Our nation’s response to this humanitarian crisis at the border has not been clear or coherent…the voices which have defined the debate have been guilty of the same underlying misconception: that these children must be "criminals" and that they need to be returned to their home countries at the earliest possible time. However this is not true. First, children (and even adults fleeing persecution) are not criminals if they are at the border and declare themselves afraid to return home. It is a flagrant violation of international law and also our domestic laws…to brand them criminals and fail to fully consider their claims…To frame the debate as merely an enforcement issue misses the crucial bedrock issue: whether or not these kids are entitled to protection as refugees…" -  Prof. Geoffrey A. Hoffman, July 21, 2014
